Anyone At All
written by Carole King and Carole Bayer Sager
produced by Carole King, Carole Bayer Sager and Humberto Gatica
A friend from high school and I saw You’ve Got Mail in the theaters
during its run in late ’98. It was in the days when along with
everyone else, I likely would’ve gotten up and left when the credits
started. Today I’d sit to enjoy the credits and see if there were a
hidden scene at the end or anything like that. And so back in the day, if I had sat through the credits and heard this Carole King song made especially for the film, I’m sure I’d have loved it just the same. When YGM aired on TV, I VCR’d it, and viewed it enough times to establish some fond familiarity, and become acquainted—and quickly infatuated—with this end title song, “Anyone At All.” It took not long for me to place it on my 8th volume of favorite songs in 2001, making it obvious that I nabbed the soundtrack sometime between December ’98 and then. And as stated in the notes for “You’ve Got A Friend” also by Carole...
...Hey, look at that... “You’ve Got A Friend”... You’ve Got Mail... interesting.
Anyway, as stated, this song took over the latter part of the tribute video I made for my beloved actress Carol Kane, with spliced moments of her featured parts in TV and movies since the early ’70s. I believe the video played chronologically and started with a silhouette of Carol in Carnal Knowledge, a film from ’71... the year “You’ve Got A Friend” dropped and became a hit (for both Carole King and James Taylor). Carnal Knowledge... same initials as both Miss King and Miss Kane. Wow... coincidences abound.
This song is magic to sing along with... and it still makes me cry... not entirely unlike the end of the film when—spoiler alert—Meg finally realizes it really was Tom she was corresponding with all along, and starts crying because she wanted it to be him. Like the song proclaims, “I’m so glad it was you.”

Funny how I feel / More myself with you / Than anybody else that I ever knew / I hear it in your voice / See it in your face / You’ve become the memory I can’t erase / You could’ve been anyone at all / A stranger falling out of the blue / I’m so glad it was you / It wasn’t in the plan / Not that I could see / Suddenly a miracle came to me / Safe within your arms / I can say what’s true / Nothing in the world I would keep from you / You could’ve been anyone at all / An old friend calling out of the blue / I’m so glad it was you / Words can hurt you / If you let them / People say them and forget them / Words can promise / Words can lie / But your words make me feel like I can fly / You could’ve been anyone at all / A net that catches me when I fall / I’m so glad it was you / (You could’ve been anyone) / x1 / Anyone at all / You could’ve been anyone at all / Anyone at all / I’m so glad it was you
