Apologize

written by Ryan Tedder

produced by Greg Wells

I’m making this page June 26th, 2021, the 42nd birthday of

OneRepublic frontman, lead singer and (co-)songwriter Ryan

Tedder. Happy Birthday, RT!!

So with this birthday tribute, here’s another relatively recent selection (i.e., 21st century). When it came time to do this birthday tribute, it came down to “Apologize” and one other OneRepublic song. Besides being more familiar with “Apologize,” I chose it because Ryan wrote it entirely himself.

Ryan is from Tulsa, Oklahoma, and in 2002 formed OneRepublic with his bandmates after relocating to the midwest. With “Apologize” recorded but not yet released, Timbaland famously remixed it with OR and worked this remix into one of the song’s music videos.

After scoring their record deal with Interscope Records, they hit it big in later 2007 with their original recording of the song. It became their debut single, which pre-dated their opening album, Dreaming Out Loud. “Apologize” cracked the top 5 all over the planet, boosted the album’s positions and sent its sales skyrocketing. The band has remained massively popular ever since, with new records each couple of years, and singles continuing to chart globally, into the year 2021 and counting.

Have notes to add? Let me know!

Lyrics

I’m holding on your rope, got me ten feet off the ground And I’m hearing what you say, but I just can’t make a sound You tell me that you need me, then you go and cut me down, but wait You tell me that you’re sorry, didn’t think I’d turn around, and say that It’s too late to apologize, it’s too late I said it’s too late to apologize, it’s too late Yeah, ohhh I’d take another chance, take a fall, take a shot for you And I need you like a heart needs a beat, but it’s nothin’ new, yeah, yeah I loved you with a fire red, now it’s turning blue, and you say “Sorry,” like the angel heaven let me think was you, but I’m afraid x1 Whoa, whoa x1 I said it’s too late to apologize, yeah (too late) I said it’s too late to apologize, yeah (too late) I’m holding on your rope, got me ten feet off the ground
