Revisited
Beverly Hills
written by Rivers Cuomo
produced by Rick Rubin
Yet another birthday tribute, I made this page the day after Weezer
singer/songwriter Rivers Cuomo turned 51. ...Geez, I feel old. And
yet another song from the 21st century, “Beverly Hills” popped as
the first and pre-album single from Make Believe in ’05. Rivers
started writing the song inspired by a photo of Wilson “Hold On” Phillips at the Hollywood Bowl. It became Weezer’s biggest commercial hit, surpassing 1994’s “Buddy Holly,” which had previously held the title. Perhaps Rivers should write more songs named for proper nouns with the initials ‘B.H.’
Weezer is still going as of the construction of this page, having released Van Weezer as their most recent album on May 7th, 2021. And still charting! Not bad for a band that’s been active for almost 30 straight years. Like many in the biz, Rivers got started young, already in bands as a teen, and forming Weezer at 22. The David Geffen Company issued their albums up to 2009’s Raditude. In the mid-2010s the band signed with Atlantic. While not in actual Beverly Hills itself, the song’s video was filmed at the nearby Playboy Mansion. Indie band Agent Sparks’ Stephanie Eitel chants the “gimme gimme!” throughout the chorus. Happy big 5-1, R.C.!!

Lyrics
Where I come from isn’t all that great / My automobile is a piece of crap / My fashion sense is a little wack / And my friends are just as screwy as me / I didn’t go to boarding schools / Preppy girls never looked at me / Why should they? I ain’t nobody / Got nothin’ in my pocket / Beverly Hills / That’s where I want to be (gimme gimme, gimme gimme) / Living in Beverly Hills / Beverly Hills / Rolling like a celebrity (gimme gimme, gimme gimme) / Living in Beverly Hills / Look at all those movie stars / They’re all so beautiful and clean / When the housemaids scrub the floors / They get the spaces in between / I wanna live a life like that / I wanna be just like a king / Take my picture by the pool / ’Cause I’m the next big thing in / x1 / The truth is, I don’t stand a chance / It’s something that you’re born into / And I just don’t belong / No I don’t, I’m just a no-class beat-down fool / And I will always be that way / I might as well enjoy my life / And watch the stars play / x1 / Beverly Hills / Beverly Hills, yeah / Beverly Hills / Beverly Hills (gimme gimme) / Living in Beverly Hills
