Come To My Window
written by Melissa Etheridge
produced by Hugh Padgham and Melissa Etheridge
Here’s my favorite All American Girl, Melissa, originally from
Kansas, who put out her first album with Island Records in 1988,
when she was almost 27. (Besides this being the next one in
sequence, I fortuitously made this page close to May 29th, in honor
of Melissa’s birthday (big six-oh!!).) While it would take about five more years before M.E. really found her way into the limelight, big Melissa fans like myself love and appreciate her early pre-hit work all the same. Several singles spawned from Mel’s first three albums, from ’88 up to ’93, but ’93 and ’94 were the years that would see Melissa break into the mainstream and start enjoying some serious radio airplay. Single one from Melissa’s acclaimed Yes I Am album was the dynamic and semi-edgy “I’m The Only One,” released the same day as the album. Its second single, this song, “Come To My Window,” came out around the turn of 1994. While the chart positions at the time reflect a rivalry between the two songs for Yes I Am’s biggest hit, I personally feel the former lacks a bit of the staying power of the latter. “Window” remains a brilliant and beloved piece of all American pop rock, with a black and white video co-starring Juliette Lewis. It’s simply a beautiful love song, with no real edge or bite to it, and I think this helps it retain the aforementioned staying power that’s made and kept it one of Melissa’s all-time greatest hits for the almost 30 years since.
A very inferior version of the music video appears to still be on YT, but it’s the only one I can find at the moment. For that reason, I’m linking only to the audio. If you find a better one, please chime in.
Have notes to add? Let me know!

Come to my window / Crawl inside, wait by the light of the moon / Come to my window / I’ll be home soon / I would dial the numbers / Just to listen to your breath / And I would stand inside my hell / And hold the hand of death / You don’t know how far I’d go / To ease this precious ache / And you don’t know how much I’d give / Or how much I can take / Just to reach you / Just to reach you / Oh, to reach you / x1 / Keeping my eyes open / I cannot afford to sleep / Giving away promises / I know that I can’t keep / Nothing fills the blackness / That has seeped into my chest / I need you in my blood / I am forsaking all the rest / x1 / x1 / I don’t care what they think / I don’t care what they say / What do they know about this love, anyway? / Come, come to my window / I’ll be home, I’ll be home, I’ll be home / I’m coming home! / x1 / I’ll be home, I’ll be home, I’m coming home! / x1 / I’ll be home, I’ll be home, I’ll be home
