PAUL YOUNG

Every Time You Go Away

written by Daryl Hall

produced by Laurie Latham

Paul Young is a British artist mostly known for cover versions he’s

done of various classic songs. Some have referred to him as a cover

artist... in which regard he could be thought of as the British male

version of Laura Branigan (the American queen of cover songs).

Notable songs sung by Paul were originally recorded by acts like The Four Preps, Marvin Gaye, Joy Division, The Chi-Lites, Crowded House, Jimmy Ruffin... and in the case of this song, Hall & Oates.

Daryl Hall penned the song “Everytime You Go Away” (stylized with no space between the first two words, compounding “every-time”), and recorded it with partner and co-mega-million-record-seller John Oates for their 1980 album Voices—where it was not released as a single, but overshadowed by the current H&O hits “You Make My Dreams (Come True),” “Kiss On My List,” and their own cover of The Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.” For this reason, it was easier for listeners to believe Paul may have written “Every Time” or recorded it as a new original song.

Paul recorded it in 1984 for his album The Secret Of Association. It was his first single of 1985, and one of three singles released from the Association album before the record itself dropped. Between that album’s recording and release, Paul was one of dozens of British artists selected to participate in the 1984 holiday charity event and recording of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” under the collective name Band Aid. Paul also, as a matter of fact, holds the distinction of being the first voice we hear in the song.

1984 was also the year one of Paul’s earlier songs, “Love Of The Common People,” was plucked for inclusion in the late great John Hughes’ directorial debut, Sixteen Candles. In something of a charming coincidence, three years later, John wrote, produced and directed the Thanksgiving-themed comedy Planes, Trains And Automobiles, which closed with yet another version of “Every Time You Go Away,” performed by Blue Room. Three more years after that, Paul scored another hit with what was probably the first song of his I ever heard, his version of The Chi-Lites’ “Oh Girl.”

This is another case of printing lyrics where I know they’re just a bit imperfect—in those bits at the end where the lead singer is ad-libbing over the backing singers, and it gets a bit unintelligible in spots. Even if we had an “official” source, I don’t know if it would go into that much detail. I want to be as detailed as possible in these, but when unable to, I can only apologize in profuseness. Sorry!!

Have notes to add? Let me know!

Lyrics

Take... Hey, if we can solve any problem Then why do we lose so many tears? Oh, so you go again When the leading man appears Always the same thing Can’t you see, we got everything Goin’ on and on and on Every time you go away You take a piece of me with you Every time you go away You take a piece of me with you, oooh Go on and go free, yeah Maybe you’re too close to see I can feel your body move Doesn’t mean that much to me I can’t go on, saying the same thing ’Cause can’t you see, we got everything Baby, even though you know Every time you go away, yeah You take a piece of me with you, ohhh Every time you go away You take a piece of me with you, oooh I can’t go on, saying the same thing ’Cause baby, can’t you see, we got everything Goin’ on and on and on Every time you go away You take a piece of me with you Every time you go away You take a piece of me with you (Every time you go away) Ohhh (You take a piece of me with you) Every time Every time you go away, away (You take a piece of me with you)* (Every time you go away) Every time you go (You take a piece of me with you) Don’t leave me all alone, picking up the pieces Picking up the pieces (Every time you go away), oooh Be careful (You take a piece of me with you) (Every time you go away)/[fade]
