MICHELLE BRANCH
written by Michelle Branch and John Shanks
produced by John Shanks
I’m making this page July 2nd, 2021, the 38th birthday of Michelle
Jacquet DeSevren Branch. Happy Birthday, MB!!
Michelle was born and raised in Sedona, Arizona, an interestingly
random tidbit in and of itself. How many individuals can truthfully tell you that the names of their hometown and state rhyme?
Michelle started writing songs as a teenager and posting them on Rolling Stone’s website, winning herself some attention, leading to a self-produced debut album, Broken Bracelet, distributed through indie label Twin Dragon. Now with a foot in the door, the following year she scored a recording deal with Madonna’s then-major label Maverick Records, owned by Warner Bros. Her first Maverick album, The Spirit Room, was her most successful, earning three hit singles. Single number one here, “Everywhere,” peaked highest in New Zealand at #2. Its follow-up “All You Wanted” performed almost as impressively.
Michelle released a second Maverick album in ’03, Hotel Paper. Its singles didn’t reach as high as Spirit Room’s did, but it scored higher on the album charts. In the mid 20-00s, Michelle formed a band with backing singer Jessica Harp, called The Wreckers. She returned to solo work at the turn of the ’10s. Her label Maverick went under in 2009, so she was transferred to a different member of the Warner family, Reprise. She dropped two extended plays in 2010 and ’11. After taking another break from recording, she returned in 2017 with Hopeless Romantic, now released through jazz-heavy label Verve Records.
Keep in mind that Michelle recorded “Everywhere” as a young lass of merely 17!

Lyrics
Turn it inside out so I can see / The part of you that’s drifting over me / And when I wake you’re, you’re never there / And when I sleep you’re, you’re everywhere / You’re everywhere / Just tell me how I got this far / Just tell me why you’re here and who you are / ’Cause every time I look, you’re never there / And every time I sleep, you’re always there / ’Cause you’re everywhere to me / And when I close my eyes, it’s you I see / You’re everything I know, that makes me believe / I’m not alone / I’m not alone / I recognize the way you make me feel / It’s hard to think that you might not be real / I sense it now, the water’s getting deep / I try to wash the pain away from me, away from me / x1 / I’m not alone / I’m not alone, whoa, whoa-oh-whoa / When I touch your hand, it’s then I understand / The beauty that’s within, it’s now that we begin / You always light my way, I hope there never comes a day / No matter where I go, I always feel you so / x1 / ’Cause you’re everywhere to me / And when I catch my breath, it’s you I breathe / You’re everything I know, that makes me believe / I’m not alone / You’re in everyone I see / So tell me, do you see me
