February Song

JOSH GROBAN

written by Josh Groban, Marius de Vries and John Ondrasik

produced by Marius de Vries

Here’s another song from the 21st century, a selection I found on

iTunes when searching for songs about February. In an earlier

entry—January” by Autoheart—I described a project I was working

on at the time in which I planned to make videos for every month. I

wanted two songs for each, and made this one together with the other song I chose for February. That song is the previous one I catalogued, just before this one: Sophie B. Hawkins’ “As I Lay Me Down.” It opens with the line, “It felt like springtime on this February morning...” Later on you’ll see the songs I chose for the following months.

So this one is beautifully warbled—as he has a way of doing—by bari-tenor Josh Winslow Groban, from L.A., CA. Though debatable as they often are, Josh’s biggest (non-holiday) hit may have been his very earliest, “To Where You Are,” from his self-titled debut record, although right up there with it from two years later was the inspirational “You Raise Me Up.”  Album three, Awake, featuring “February Song,” came a few years later, in the fall of 2006. As a matter of fact, Josh’s first three albums were all released in the Novembers of their respective years.

Prior to making this page, I was unaware that “February Song” was released as a single—specifically, the fourth from Awake, circa early ’07—and as well had a video made for it. But that’s one of the things projects like this and research for them are all about: learning and sharing fun bits like that. While Josh’s official YT channel has the video, there doesn’t seem to be a YT video featuring only its official audio. This is one example where I feel the album audio’s important to have, as the music video is a full minute shorter. Artists and bands frequently use edited versions of their songs for videos, keeping the real essence of the song in doing so, as shooting and producing videos is cheaper this way. In addition, the music video channels prefer to play shorter videos. Enjoy.

Lyrics

Where has that old friend gone Lost in a February song Tell him it won’t be long Till he opens his eyes Opens his eyes Where is that simple day Before colors broke into shades And how did I ever fade Into this life Into this life And I never want to let you down Forgive me if I slip away When all that I’ve known is lost and found I promise you I, I’ll come back to you one day Morning is waking up And sometimes it’s more than just enough When all that you need to love Is in front of your eyes It’s in front of your eyes And I never want to let you down Forgive me if I slip away Sometimes it’s hard to find my ground ’Cause I keep on falling as I try to get away From this crazy world x1 x1
