I Want To Come Over
written by Melissa Etheridge
produced by Melissa Etheridge and Hugh Padgham
Melissa is a truly gifted singer and songwriter—a double threat, if
you will. Triple, if you throw in her eclat for playing the guitar.
Quadruple, acting with charisma in her videos. And I’m not just
saying that because she’s my favorite American female singer.
...Okay, I partially am.
In the early stages of making the site and its first couple dozen pages, I barely missed out on Melissa’s birthday (her big six-oh, in fact), though I came close at the time of making the page for “Come To My Window.” “Come Over,” meanwhile, was Melissa’s ’95 album Your Little Secret’s biggest commercial hit—reaching all the way up to #1 on the Canadian chart—and I did not actually plan to mention a chart or anything else belonging to our great white neighbor to the north because today is July 1st; that was just a nice coincidence. Wow, I’m going off on a lot of tangents here. All right, moving on. Rewind, take two.
“Come Over” was Melissa’s ’95 album Your Little Secret’s biggest commercial hit—reaching all the way up to #1 on the Canadian chart—though the title track, released first and pre-dating the album, also did well, hitting #4 on the US rock chart. “Come Over” popped loose as its own single in January ’96. The Your Little Secret record was released mid-November 1995, so I’m still technically listing the song with the date of 1995. With the companion single, “Nowhere To Go,” the album peaked at #6 US. Its original release stands at ten songs, as does its predecessor, Yes I Am, from 1993 (home of “I’m The Only One” and “Come To My Window”). But hey, oftentimes concision is our friend.
...If you take a step back and really look at the lyrics to this song... it’s almost actually a little creepy and stalker-ish... almost, I said, Mel, almost. When I sing along with this song, I like to change the last line of the chorus to, “I want to come to your window.” Get it? See what I did there?
By the way... who’s that in the video? It’s Gwyneth Paltrow!
Have notes to add? Let me know!

Lyrics
I know you’re home, you left your light on / You know I’m here, the night is thin / I know you’re alone, I watched the car leave / Your lover is gone, let me in / Open your back door, I just need to touch you once more / Ohhh, ohhhhhhhh / I want to come over, to hell with the consequence / You told me you love me, that’s all I believe / I want to come over, it’s a need I can’t explain / To see you again, I want to come over / I know your friend, you told her about me / She filled you with fear, some kind of sin / How can you turn, denying the fire / Lover, I burn, let me in / x1 / x1 / Oh-oh-oh-ohhh / Oh-oh-oh-ohhh / I know you’re confused, I know that you’re shaken / You think we’ll be lost, once we begin / I know you’re weak, I know that you want me / Lover, don’t speak, let me in / I want to come over, to hell with the consequence / You told me you love me, that’s all I believe / I want to come over, it’s a need I can’t explain / I want to come over / To see you, to see you again
