Images Of Heaven
written by Peter Godwin
English new waver Peter Godwin scored a cult hit in ’82 with this
appropriately celestial pop nugget. It was always a favorite of mine
since I first nabbed it on a Rhino compilation (it closed one of the
volumes of the label’s Just Can’t Get Enough new wave series), and
while I was putting together playlists of my favorite songs in the
20-00s, this one eventually found itself paired with Berlin’s “Like Flames” (see The List’s previous entry), side by side on one of my homemade compilations. Originally, I was going to line up “Like Flames” together beside a Depeche Mode song with a similar but darker shade, “Enjoy The Silence.” Remember how in my notes on “Like Flames” when I stated it would make quite the theme song for hell? Well, if heaven were conversely assigned one, I at first felt DM’s mystic flavors of “Enjoy The Silence” would fit the vibe of the ethereal sky realm. Mind you, this was back in the days when my musical tastes leaned a bit more towards the dark and edgy, so DM carried some influence on me. And this was also before I discovered “Images Of Heaven.” It took not long from there to decide that while a bit on the nose, as it were, it was certainly not too much so. Berlin and Godwin have stuck together in my playlists since. And while Peter may not have experienced the level of acclaimed success struck by Terri Nunn and the lads, he did approve of my 2014 version of “Heaven” with the special audio treatment. A proud day in my life. He invites fans to connect with him on social media in the 21st century. And while the good Mr. Godwin does have a YT channel, “Heaven” is ostensibly not included on it. I’ve also got an extended remix of this song, but if it exists on record, I’ve no idea where. Here, however, is its YT vid as well. While the lyrics are identical, the extended version contains spoken portions of the verse and refrain.
Have notes to add? Let me know!

Nothing is sacred / So give me your soul, my love / Nothing is wasted / On someone like you / Somebody killed me / They tore out my heart, my love / Somebody filled me / With photos of you / And there’s nothing I can do / The media made you / There’s nothing I can do / ’Cause you don’t exist / You don’t exist, just / Images of heaven / That take me to hell / Images of heaven / Of something for sale / Images of heaven / Images of heaven / Something possessed me / An image of you, my love / Video visions / That play on my mind / Nobody blessed me / With power to reach, my love / One cheap illusion / Can still be divine / And nobody believes / In this new religion / Yeah, nobody believes / ’Cause nobody sees / Nobody sees / x1 / Images of heaven / Images of heaven / And there’s nothing I can do / The camera made you / There’s nothing I can do / ’Cause you don’t exist / You don’t exist, just / x1
