Let The River Run
written by Carly Simon
produced by Rob Mounsey and Carly Simon
I’m making this page June 25th, 2021, the 76th birthday
of Carly Elisabeth Simon. Happy Birthday, CS!!
As Carly’s signature song “You’re So Vain” is not exactly my favorite
of hers, and the song of hers which is my favorite would be considered a rather odd, off-the-wall choice... we’ll get to both of them someday, but in the meantime, here’s my first Carly cut. It was written and recorded for the Melanie Griffith film Working Girl, as were a few additional Carly contributions. It’s a semi-majestic beaut, I’m sure many of us can agree on that.
Carly originally comes from the Bronx, and nailed her first major recording deal in her mid-20s. Around the turn of the ’70s, Carly signed with Elektra—as one of the label’s first big acts to prove a force to be reckoned with, with some real lasting power, after bands like Bread and The Doors. Elektra carried Carly through the whole of the ’70s, and she released eight studio albums with them, averaging out to almost one per year. Album three, 1972’s No Secrets, performed best, scoring in the top 5 in each market and going platinum, with the inclusion of her aforementioned career-defining “You’re So Vain.”
1977 brought Carly her next #1 hit, though not used on one of her albums: “Nobody Does It Better,” from the James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me. The ’80s cooled her down a bit, as her recording sales figures settled, and she bounced between a few different labels, but kept charting. She wrote down and recorded “Let The River Run” for Working Girl by decade’s end. More records followed in the ’90s and ’00s, as Carly’s career shifted from the mainstream to the ongoing gift for her fans, who have kept her going strong since. In the 21st century, Carly recorded and contributed a couple franchise-friendly songs to some Winnie the Pooh films (as did another decades-strong recording artist, Kenny Loggins). She made the soundtracks to 2003’s Piglet’s Big Movie, and ’05’s Pooh’s Heffalump Movie.
Carly’s positively radiant in this music video.

Lyrics
We’re coming to the edge, running on the water / Coming through the fog, your sons and daughters / Let the river run / Let all the dreamers wake the nation / Come, the new Jerusalem / Silver cities rise / The morning lights, the streets that meet them / And sirens call them on with a song / It’s asking for the taking / Trembling, shaking / Oh, my heart is aching / x1 / We the great and small / Stand on a star, and blaze a trail / Of desire, through the dark’ning dawn / It’s asking for the taking / Come run with me now, the sky is the color of blue / You’ve never even seen in the eyes of your lover / (Oh, my heart is aching) / x1 / x1 / x1 / x1
