Monday Morning
written by Lindsey Buckingham
I’m making this page June 24th, 2021, the 74th birthday of
Michael (Mick) John Kells Fleetwood. Happy Birthday, MF!!
In 1973, Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham, together with a
young Stevie Nicks, released a Buckingham-Nicks album, for which
they wrote 90% of the songs. It did little commercially, and soon led the Buckingham/Nicks duo’s label, Polydor, to drop them from their roster. Some of the songs that appeared on their 1975 self-titled album were originally intended for a second LB/SN duo record, but since that did not happen, here we are.
Fleetwood Mac’s first eponymous album was their original debut, from ’68. This was back when the band was an all-male act, with lead singers Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer on vocals. On the following album the same year, Christine McVie—then known as Christine Perfect—was brought onboard, and since became a member. When it was time to bring together and round out the ’75 Warner eponymous album, Lindsey’s duo partner Stevie Nicks was brought along to fill the band, and became the other permanent female member.
This page is the birthday tribute for Mick Fleetwood, as noted above, who from the beginning has been the band’s drummer. Founding together with John McVie, they named it after themselves. Mick’s written and co-written a few FM numbers, but for the most part has left the composing duties to his cohorts. For the 1975 FM FM album on which we’re focusing here, three fifths of the band shared the writing, for the eleven songs that made the final cut. Lindsey wrote “I’m So Afraid,” as well as the song we’re covering on this page. Christine wrote the dreamy “Over My Head,” the super-hit “Say You Love Me” and a few others. And Stevie wrote the beautiful “Rhiannon” and beyond legendary “Landslide.”
While opening the album, “Monday Morning” was not released as a single—rather, it was “Say You Love Me”’s b-side in ’76, the following year. Yet, it’s one of a few songs I know best from the record, as I placed it in one of my homemade playlists—a playlist of songs all about Mondays. That’s right; I’m sure you can readily bring to mind some other classic Monday-themed songs that too made that playlist. (Another is right here.) After I ran out of them, the playlist started branching off into other songs that merely mentioned Monday in the lyrics and so on.
Have notes to add? Let me know!

Lyrics
Monday morning, you sure look fine / Friday, I got travelin’ on my mind / First you love me, and then you fade away / I can’t go on believin’ this way / I got nothing but love for you / Tell me what you really wanna do / First you love me, then you get on down the line / But I don’t mind, I don’t mind, yeah, yeah / I’ll be there if you want me to / No one else that could ever do / Got to get some peace in my mind / Monday morning, you sure look fine / Friday, I got travelin’ on my mind / First you love me, and then you say it’s wrong / Y’know I can’t go on believin’ for long / But you know, it’s true, yes / You only want me when I get over you / First you love me, then you get on down the line / But I don’t mind, no, I don’t mind, yeah, yeah / x1 / But you know, it’s true / Y’know you only want me when I get over you / Oh, first you love me, then you get on down the line / x1 / x1
