She’s Not There

written by Rod Argent

produced by Marquis Enterprises

I’m making this page on June 24th, 2021, the 76th birthday of Colin

Edward Michael Blunstone, the lead singer of The Zombies.

Happy Birthday, CB!!

9 days ago happened to be the birthday of the founder of the group, Rod Argent, and I made two pages to commemorate that. One of them was another Zombies song, Time Of The Season.” Matching its success a few years earlier was this, “She’s Not There,” their kickoff single, from their opening album Begin Here. The single dropped several months before the album did.

Rod was inspired to pen “She’s Not There” by a similarly lyricized John Lee Hooker song, “No One Told Me.” He wrote this song with Colin and his vocal range in mind, looking forward to hearing him deliver it. Just as with “Season” and their other works, The Zombies had a way of living up to their name a bit in their sound; while the songs were beautiful, they also carried in them an air of haunting eeriness.

I wonder what sort of success a band with this name would have if they’d formed 50 years later and cashed in on the zombie monster fad... after changing their name from The Vampires, of course.

Have notes to add? Let me know!

Lyrics

Well, no one told me about her, the way she lied Well, no one told me about her, how many people cried But it’s too late to say you’re sorry How would I know, why should I care Please don’t bother trying to find her, she’s not there Well, let me tell you ’bout the way she looked The way she acts, and the color of her hair Her voice was soft and cool, her eyes were clear and bright But she’s not there Well, no one told me about her, what could I do Well, no one told me about her, though they all knew x1 / x1 x1 x1
