Somebody Told Me
written by Brandon Flowers, Mark Stoermer, Dave Keuning and
Ronnie Vannucci, Jr.
produced by The Killers
I’m making this page June 28th, 2021, the 44th birthday of Mark
August Stoermer, bassist for The Killers who also provided some
rhythm guitar, backing vocals, and co-wrote many of their songs like
this. (I’ve not often been making birthday tributes for band members who are not the lead singers/front-figures of the groups, but I came up with a big drought in looking for noteworthy singers/musicians born on June 28th, so here we are and here we go.) Happy Birthday, MS!!
Hard-rockin’ American band The Killers were formed in Vegas, starting with frontman and vocalist Brandon Flowers, who also played keyboards, and guitarist Dave Keuning. Mark and drummer Ronnie Vannucci, Jr. were brought on a bit later. New Order’s song “Crystal” had a music video revolving around a fictitious rock band called The Killers, so it was from there the group took their name.
After signing with Island Records, The Killers found an early single and radio hit in “Mr. Brightside,” a song about the agony of relationship infidelity, which was released as the band’s very first single, in early autumn 2003. It cracked the top 10 on the US, US alternative and UK charts as well. Debut album Hot Fuss—the future home of “Mr. Brightside”—would spawn three additional singles in ’04 and ’05, starting with the song I’ve got here on this page, “Somebody Told Me.”
The Killers have released five studio albums since 2004’s Hot Fuss, each and every one—including Fuss—a UK chart-topper, with impressive positions the rest of the world over to boot. Imploding The Mirage came out August 2020, accompanied by no less than four singles. I really admire and appreciate acts who are doing their part to preserve full-length albums, a dying art form in the 2020s.

Lyrics
Breaking my back just to know your name / Seventeen tracks and I’ve had it with this game / I’m breaking my back just to know your name / But heaven ain’t close in a place like this / Anything goes, but don’t blink, you might miss / ’Cause heaven ain’t close in a place like this / I said, a-heaven ain’t close in a place like this / Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight (hooo, hooo) / Never thought I’d let a rumor ruin my moonlight / Well, somebody told me you had a boyfriend / Who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year / It’s not confidential, I’ve got potential / Ready, let’s roll onto something new / Taking its toll, then I’m leaving without you / x1 / Well, somebody told me you had a boyfriend / Who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year / It’s not confidential, I’ve got potential / A-rushin’, a-rushin’ around / Pace yourself for me (for me) / I said maybe, baby, please (please, please) / But I just don’t know now (maybe, baby) / When all I want to do is try / Well, somebody told me you had a boyfriend / Who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year / It’s not confidential, I’ve got potential / A-rushin’, a-rushin’ around now / Somebody told me you had a boyfriend / Who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year / It’s not confidential, I’ve got potential / A-rushin’, a-rushin’ around / x1
