The List

Welcome... to The List. (I’ve taken to capitalizing just about every mention of... The List. Out of mere facetious whimsy—and because it’s become a pretty impressive list, with over 4,000 entries in it; we’ll get around to them all eventually—not because I’m taking myself, this project, or... The List, too seriously. Whimsy is my proverbial bag, not serious.)

Within the first few hundred entries, some numbers in my original numbering system are missing. (That’s my original system, not the system being used on this site; you’ll find no missing numbers in the site’s List.) In this sense, The List is... technically incomplete. These missing numbers did at one time have songs attached to them—songs which I have since decided are either unsuitable for this format and audio treatment I’m using, or have decided not to keep in The List. There is always the chance I might go back and track them down one day, and/or try to make them anew. Multiple versions of songs by the same artist(s) will be sub-listed under the same number. Live versions and (re)mixes account for virtually all the multiple song versions. Lots of songs will never have any additional incarnations other than their original produced release versions… though we never know.

For the most part, as far as which songs I chronologically chose, there’s little rhyme or reason. Eventually, I started following patterns, taking songs from various sources after I couldn’t readily think of more. So if you peruse The List, numerically, entry by entry, you’ll see songs bouncing all over the place, sometimes staying within the same genre(s) or artist(s) in close proximity, sometimes not, sometimes completely random… sometimes you won’t be able to guess what’s coming next.

It should be made clear that at any given time, you’re going to see far more entries placed in the list that do not yet have their pages constructed than those that do. Hopefully it’s understandable that it takes a great deal longer to make a page for a song that it does to merely type its title and artist into The List. So that’ll be something else you’ll want to keep in mind. As I’ve no doubt stated elsewhere, if you note specific songs in The List that don’t yet have their pages constructed that you’d like to see, contact me!

Finally, while I pride myself on my research in tracking down these songs’ release details, I readily admit that I hold no monopolies on the official info. My research is all based on second- (and/or third-)hand sources—I am a mere fan and music historian not belonging to the music business itself—and while I remain confident in the majority of it, if you can show me proof any of my information is erroneous, I would love to be corrected via said proof and update the site with it.

Construction of The List is always in progress, hence where you’ll see breaks or incompletion here and there. You can use your browser’s find feature (usually Ctrl+F on Windows) to search for specific content. Here on the page-by-page List, you’ll see 100 semi-detailed entries per page, page 1 as such below with songs #1-#100. As mentioned, for a few reasons, the numbering system represented on the site is not the numbering system I originally used, though what’s really important are the songs themselves. For a fuller search, I’ve decided to make a separate page just here, with all titles in smaller text. Links on the List will lead to their individual corresponding entries on the site. Enjoy!
