These Dreams
written by Bernie Taupin and Martin Page
produced by Ron Nevison
Welcome to another marvelous track by Heart, from the self-titled
summer 1985 album, now at the time also featuring Mark Andes
(bass/vocals), Howard Leese (keyboard/guitars) and Denny
Carmassi (percussion) in the band. Single number three off the
Heart album was their first of ’86, “These Dreams.” I rather like it just as much as “Never” (previous song), in its own way. As a matter of fact, once upon a time I paired them up into a two-song mash-up, with “Never” first, fading right into “Dreams” as it’s ending. “These Dreams” was arguably the Heart record’s biggest hit, peaking at #1 on both the US and US Adult Contemporary charts. It’s also probably my favorite Heart video, with its artful use of a fantasy desert scene juxtaposed with the band singing it live. And just check out that huge ’80s hair. It doesn’t get much bigger than that. Sweet Dreams.
Quick note: this is another example you’ll see many times throughout the songs on this site, of one with a tempo that I’ve deemed acceptable for two audio-treated versions, with two different echo intervals. So again, that’s why there’ll be two samples below.

Lyrics
Spare a little candle, save some light for me / Figures up ahead, moving in the trees / White skin in linen, perfume on my wrist / And the full moon that hangs over / These dreams in the mist / Darkness on the edge, shadows where I stand / I search for the time on a watch with no hands / I want to see you clearly, come closer than this / But all I remember / Are the dreams in the mist / These dreams go on when I close my eyes / Every second of the night, I live another life / These dreams that sleep when it’s cold outside / Every moment I’m awake, the further I’m away / Is it cloak and dagger, could it be spring or fall / I walk without a cut through a stained glass wall / Weaker in my eyesight, the candle in my grip / And words that have no form / Are falling from my lips / x1 / There’s something out there I can’t resist / I need to hide away from the pain / There’s something out there I can’t resist / The sweetest song is silence, that I’ve ever heard / Funny how your feet in dreams never touch the earth / In a wood full of princes, freedom is a kiss / But the prince hides his face / From dreams in the mist / x2
