Turning Around

written by Jimmy Buffett, Michael Utley and Will Jennings

So this one is by Jimmy William “Margaritaville” Buffett, from one

of those years that’s rather significant to me, pop-culture wise, 1985.

It was one of the first (if not the first) songs that came to me by way

of request, as it were. My oldest friend—who has stood the test of

time—liked the John Candy movie Summer Rental, and this song,

from which it came. Over Summer Rental’s closing credits, he told me, played “Turning Around” by Jimmy Buffett, a song with which I was not familiar, and for decent reason. Like most pop artists who are pretty well-known, I have an album or two and a greatest hits package from Mr. Buffett, and so at the time I knew “Margaritaville,” “Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes” and “Cheeseburger In Paradise.” But I’d never heard “Turning Around,” and then we discovered why. It was simply because I hadn’t seen Summer Rental. Outside of that film, this song still to this day exists NOWHERE. It has never been released on record that I can find, and if anyone would know about that kind of thing, I’d be a decent candidate. I can only conclude and Jimmy, and/or MCA—his record company at the time—were not interested in releasing it, or instead that they decided to relinquish the song’s rights to Paramount Pictures. Oh, you can find it on YouTube, of course—the Walmart of the internet—as my link below will attest, but not on Jimmy’s official YT channel. Go figure. It’s almost as if no one wanted a thing to do with the song after the movie came out.

So, I had been making compilations for this particular friend, of his favorite songs for a few years, and being that I’m skilled at this sort of thing, I got the DVD of Summer Rental, ripped it, clipped out the song from the closing credits, made an audio file of it and sent it to him. (I’m also skilled at writing run-on sentences.) Here it is—as well as always as my enhanced audio sample—for your ears, enjoy.

Have notes to add? Let me know!

Lyrics

Sometimes I feel like a propeller Spin, spin out of control I don’t know who’s up on the throttle Oh, I wish they’d let it go All I ever do is get dizzy Thinkin’, thinkin’, things left undone Been stuck here so long down on zero I’d just like to make it to one Turning around Heroes and clowns Holdin’ my ground Oh, I’ve been down Turning around Turning around Lost till we’re found Holdin’ our ground Oh, up and down Turning around At times I get lost in daydreamin’ Sleep, sleep my life away I know in my heart I’m a sailor And my ship is on the way There never is an end to believers Lookin’, lookin’ for the right sign If everything will just keep on turnin’ All that I want will be mine x1/[repeat and fade]
